alight resembles a tone poem, following my midnight adventure to the Charles River where I happened to witness the graceful and sonically fruitful event of a mallard duck descending upon the water. The resulting flutter of ripples in the wake of the landing peaked my compositional interest and led to the synthesis of this piece. A few sections have been labeled with the direct inspiration as they correspond to the narrative. The music also explores gradually and rapidly evolving rhythms – a motivic seed is planted and left to pursue a path of organic growth. Additionally, an architecture of polytonal harmonies is constructed, stacked upwards like interlocking, fractally sprouting branches of a tree.
